Juicing both fruits and vegetables is great for our health but there are some distinct advantages to juicing vegetables. In fact, over doing it with the fruit juice may be counter productive due to its high sugar content. Juicing vegetables has many distinct benefits. It is important to include them when performing a juice detox.  By making juice that is 60-80% vegetables, you are ensuring adequate nutrition. Vegetables, especially the green ones help the body function properly due to their alkalinity. These alkaline vegetables help maintain the ph balance of the body at 7.3.  This is a contrast to meats, dairy, sugars, and processed foods which are primarily acidic. Over acidity of the blood is associated with many illnesses and a weakened immune system. Drinking the juice of such vegetables ensures that the nutrition is absorbed quickly into the body.  Some foods that are alkaline are cabbage, onions, peas, cucumbers, bell peppers.

Secondly, vegetables contain antioxidants.  Again, many green vegetables have the highest content.  Broccoli, spinach, carrots, and tomatoes are among the top ten choices to use for this benefit.  Antioxidants protect cells from the damage of oxidation.  Some of the effects of rapid oxidation include signs of aging such as wrinkles and the development of more serious diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Though oxidation is a natural process, we can slow the effects down with antioxidants.

These are just two of the benefits seen with the regular practice of drinking vegetable juice. The nutrients keep the body functioning smoothly and efficiently by eliminating the aforementioned toxic conditions of the body.

Modified Juice Detox

For some people the thought of going three days without solid food is scary and maybe even  impractical.  Food is often associated with comfort and also social situations.  A juice detox diet can force us to deal with these situations and that may not be easy for some.  You may have visions of starving or being miserable but let me tell you for most people THIS IS SIMPLY NOT THE CASE.

Don’t just give up because you are worried about completing the cleanse.  The juice detox program, which means drinking 64 ounces of juice per day, can be modified if you fall into the category above.  An occasional piece of fruit, such as an apple or banana can be eaten during the three day diet.  Some people choose to drink juice during the day and have a small meal such as rice and steamed vegetables for dinner.  This is also acceptable.  Keep in mind that these modified plans including solid foods means that your body will be digesting food.  Therefore the detox rate may be slowed down and not as efficient.  But for certain individuals that is fine.

If you are planning your first juice detox and are concerned about not eating foods, then consider this modified program.  If you can successfully handle it then you can graduate up to a full cleanse the next time.  The goal here is to get you into better health and the modified plan is a good way to get started.
